Understanding Gestational Surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy is proof of medical and emotional collaboration, where the surrogate carries a child with whom she has no genetic link. This process involves the creation of an embryo through in vitro fertilization (IVF), using the eggs and sperm of the intended parents or donors. The embryo is then transferred to the surrogate’s womb. Gestational surrogacy opens the door for both members of a couple to maintain a genetic connection with their child, sidestepping the complexities of traditional surrogacy and fostering a clear distinction between the roles of surrogate and parent.

In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate (aka the carrier) also plays the role of the egg donor, making her genetically related to the child she carries. This method typically involves artificial insemination, using the sperm of the intended father or a sperm donor. Traditional surrogacy, once the primary route to surrogacy, has become less common due to the emotional and legal intricacies arising from the genetic connection between the surrogate and the child.

Fraternal Surrogacy: Expanding the Family Tree

Fraternal surrogacy introduces a unique scenario where the surrogate is genetically related to one or both intended parents, blending the lines of traditional and gestational surrogacy. This form of surrogacy, though less common, highlights the diverse ways families can be created, emphasizing the strength of genetic bonds while navigating the intricate landscape of surrogacy agreements.

CCRM Fertility of Virginia Beach Surrogacy Program – How It Works

Navigating surrogacy can be complex, but at CCRM Fertility of Virginia Beach, the process is only 2 steps. Through the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF), the eggs are fertilized in the lab and then the embryo is transferred into the uterus of the surrogate. Our exclusive, in-house Surrogacy Program is designed to provide seamless and comprehensive support to both surrogates and intended parents.

If you are a healthy woman under the age of 44 and have experienced the joy of motherhood yourself, becoming a surrogate might resonate with you. It’s a decision that embodies generosity and compassion, offering a rewarding experience that extends beyond the surrogacy journey.

Gestational Carrier with Autologous Egg

For couples opting for an autologous approach, the intended mother’s own eggs play a central role in the creation of their future child. This process begins with a thorough infertility evaluation, complemented by all necessary FDA-required screenings. The intended mother will undergo a traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, aimed at retrieving her eggs for fertilization. Using her partner’s sperm, the eggs are fertilized in our state-of-the-art IVF laboratory. Subsequently, one of the resulting embryos is carefully transferred into the gestational carrier’s uterus, marking a pivotal step towards achieving pregnancy.

*In specific scenarios, the journey may involve the transfer of a previously frozen/cryopreserved embryo(s), offering an alternative to the use of fresh embryos.

Gestational Carrier with Donor Egg

For same-sex male couples or couples facing challenges with egg viability, donor eggs provide a valuable pathway to parenthood. In these cases, the intended parents embark on a Donor IVF cycle to secure eggs from a carefully selected donor. The eggs are then fertilized using sperm from one or both partners in a same-sex male relationship, or the male partner in a heterosexual relationship. Following fertilization, one of the embryos is transferred into the gestational carrier’s uterus, setting the stage for the growth of a new life.

At CCRM Fertility of Virginia Beach, we understand the profound significance of your decision to pursue parenthood through ART with a gestational surrogate or carrier. Our team is here to support you with advanced medical techniques, personalized care plans, and a deep commitment to making your dream of family a reality. Together, we celebrate the opportunity to embark on this extraordinary journey with you.

Financial Considerations in Gestational Surrogacy in Virginia Beach

The Cost of Gestational Surrogacy

Intended parents are responsible for covering all costs associated with the surrogacy process. This includes medical and IVF treatments, embryo transfer, genetic testing, gamete and egg banking, and support programs post-birth. Additionally, the surrogate’s needs during pregnancy, such as nutrition, housing, transportation, and medical care, are also covered by the intended parents. Given the extensive medical procedures and the surrogate’s well-being, gestational surrogacy can be a significant financial commitment.

Surrogates may receive total compensation and benefits ranging from $50,000 to $60,000, with a base fee of $30,000 to $35,000 plus additional benefits. The overall cost of surrogacy can vary, averaging between $190,000 to $230,000, with potential variations based on location and specific arrangements.

Comparing Gestational and Traditional Surrogacy Costs

Gestational surrogacy, which involves creating an embryo through IVF for implantation in the surrogate, can differ in cost from traditional surrogacy. Traditional surrogacy, where the surrogate’s egg is used, generally incurs fewer medical expenses since it may not require IVF. However, gestational surrogacy remains a preferred option for many due to its ability to allow both intended parents to be genetically related to their child.

Surrogacy with a Friend or Family Member

Choosing a friend or family member as a surrogate can personalize and deepen the surrogacy experience. While this option can potentially reduce costs, especially if the surrogate opts not to receive compensation, legal contracts and thorough surrogacy processes must still be adhered to, ensuring clarity and protection for all parties involved.

Insurance Coverage for Gestational Surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy is not typically covered by standard ACA medical plans. A surrogate’s existing health insurance policy must be carefully reviewed by a professional knowledgeable in fertility industry standards to determine if it can support surrogacy-related maternity benefits. Options for maternity care include traditional health insurance plans and maternity liability insurance, the latter of which covers the intended parents’ obligations for the surrogate’s medical expenses. Costs for these plans vary, with traditional ACA plans ranging from $11,000 to $13,000 and maternity liability insurance plans averaging between $25,500 to $28,350 for singleton pregnancies.
