Inclusive fertility insurance coverage for LGBTQIA+ patients in Washington

At CCRM Fertility of Seattle, we are proud to serve individuals and couples of all identities and family structures. Across Washington State, fertility insurance coverage is becoming more inclusive, with recent legislation designed to improve access to care for LGBTQIA+ patients.

Washington’s Building Families Act (HB 1151) expands access to fertility care by requiring certain health plans to cover infertility diagnosis, treatment, and fertility preservation services. These requirements are being phased in, with coverage for fertility preservation beginning in 2025 and broader infertility diagnosis and treatment coverage starting in 2026.

Importantly, Washington law defines infertility in a more inclusive way than traditional definitions. It includes individuals who are unable to conceive as a single person or with a partner without medical intervention, which helps ensure access to care for LGBTQIA+ individuals and single parents.

Additionally, the legislation explicitly aims to reduce disparities in access to fertility care, including for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Depending on your specific plan, covered services may include:

  • Diagnostic testing and fertility evaluations
  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • Egg or sperm retrieval and fertility preservation when medically necessary
  • Fertility medications, covered at levels comparable to other prescriptions

However, not all services are guaranteed under every plan. For example:

  • Costs associated with third-party reproduction, such as donor sperm, donor eggs, or gestational surrogacy, may not be fully covered
  • Self-insured employer plans are not subject to state insurance mandates
  • Some smaller group or religious employer plans may have exemptions or varying levels of coverage

For LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples in Seattle, these changes represent a meaningful step toward more equitable access to fertility care. Still, benefits can vary widely depending on your specific insurance plan.

At CCRM Fertility of Seattle, our team will work closely with you to review your insurance coverage, explain your options, and help you make informed decisions about your care. We are committed to supporting LGBTQIA+ families with clarity, compassion, and the highest level of expertise.
