What is IVF?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) entails the extraction of eggs from the ovaries, followed by fertilization with sperm in a laboratory dish. Subsequently, the fertilized eggs, known as embryos, are transferred to the uterus to achieve a successful pregnancy.
IVF is frequently employed when other fertility interventions prove ineffective or when underlying medical conditions pose challenges to natural conception. Additionally, IVF may be utilized to mitigate the risk of specific genetic disorders or to aid couples in conceiving when one or both partners face fertility difficulties.

IVF Costs and Considerations in San Francisco, California
In-vitro fertilization (IVF) can be a costly medical procedure when all the factors are added together. The cost of IVF treatment can vary widely depending on the type and complexity of the treatment, as well as other factors such as location and insurance coverage.
On average, one round of IVF costs between $14,000 and $24,000. This cost does not include medications, tests, and procedures associated with the cycle. CCRM Fertility of San Francisco participates with numerous insurance and fertility benefit providers, and we also partner with financing providers and offer multi-cycle packages to help make treatment more affordable.
IVF Insurance Coverage in California
Starting early 2026, many large group insurance plans in California will be required to cover the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, including in vitro fertilization (IVF). This includes up to three completed egg retrievals and unlimited embryo transfers, following guidelines from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).
These changes are part of Senate Bill 729, California’s updated fertility mandate designed to expand access to care. The law ensures that coverage applies to individuals, same-sex couples, and those experiencing infertility as a result of medical treatment (iatrogenic infertility).
If you’re covered under a large employer plan or are a CalPERS member, these benefits may apply to you. For CalPERS plans, coverage begins January 1, 2027. Some small group plans may offer infertility benefits (excluding IVF), depending on your employer.
Additionally, certain fertility preservation services—such as egg or sperm freezing prior to medical treatment—may be considered a basic health benefit under California law.
Because insurance coverage can vary by provider and plan, we encourage you to contact our financial team at (650) 646-7500. We’re here to help you understand your benefits and make informed decisions about IVF at CCRM of San Francisco.

ICSI and IVF in the San Francisco Bay Area
At CCRM Fertility of San Francisco, we utilize intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to enhance fertilization when sperm are unable to fertilize the egg on their own. In this advanced technique, a single sperm is injected directly into a mature egg, allowing fertilization to occur even in cases of severe male-factor infertility or when using frozen eggs or surgically retrieved sperm.

PCOS and IVF Treatment
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects approximately 6% to 13% of women who are of reproductive age and is one of the most common causes of infertility related to irregular or absent ovulation. For patients with PCOS, IVF is often recommended when first-line treatments like ovulation induction with letrozole do not result in pregnancy.
At CCRM Fertility of San Francisco, we tailor IVF protocols to help PCOS patients safely and effectively grow their families. Our physicians use carefully managed stimulation protocols to lower the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, a condition more common in patients with PCOS. In some cases, a “freeze-all” approach followed by frozen embryo transfer may be recommended, which has been shown to reduce moderate to severe OHSS while maintaining high success rates ASRM Practice Committee, 2021.
