This means that coverage for services like intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), donor sperm, or reciprocal IVF may vary widely based on your specific plan.
To qualify under Texas’s legal definition of infertility, most insurance plans require:
✔ That the patient is the policyholder or the spouse of the policyholder
✔ That the patient’s eggs are fertilized by her spouse’s sperm
✔ A medical history of infertility lasting five continuous years or due to a qualifying diagnosis
This definition often does not reflect the needs of LGBTQIA+ patients, which can make it harder to access coverage unless a formal infertility diagnosis is established.
