Implants of cells on the lining of the uterine cavity (endometrium) grow into the muscle wall of the uterus (the myometrium). This differs from endometriosis, where the tissue grows outside of the uterus. The symptoms of adenomyosis are painful and heavy periods, as well as abnormal uterine bleeding.
The doctor might use imaging with transvaginal ultrasound or order an MRI to examine the endometrium. However, the only definitive way to diagnose adenomyosis is after a hysterectomy, when the uterus is sent to pathology.
NSAIDs and birth control pills can be tried empirically to ease the pain temporarily. However, the only definitive treatment is a hysterectomy.
