Sue Ellen Carpenter

Ellen Carpenter, MD, infertility doctor in Atlanta, joined Atlanta Center for Reproductive Medicine in 2003 following a distinguished faculty position at Emory University School of Medicine’s Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Carpenter received her undergraduate degree Magna Cum Laude in Biochemistry from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts in 1979 and was awarded a medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 1983.

Following her medical studies at Columbia, Dr. Carpenter was accepted into the Gynecology and Obstetrics Residency program at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. During this time the first American baby conceived via in vitro fertilization was born and there was considerable collaboration between Johns Hopkins and the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine. Inspired by these advances in laparoscopic surgery and the advent of in vitro fertilization, Dr. Carpenter focused her career path on becoming a reproductive endocrinologist and went on to complete her fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1989. During her training Dr. Carpenter developed a special interest in exercise and its effects on infertility and in 1989 was awarded a substantial grant to complete the research project, “Effect of Exercise on Side Effects of Danazol”.

Dr. Carpenter remained at Johns Hopkins after her fellowship as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and served on the Admissions Committee for the School of Medicine. Her efforts and dedication to her field also earned her such esteemed positions as Director of the Donor Insemination Program and Associate Director of the In Vitro Fertilization Program, both at Hopkins. Not only is Dr. Carpenter an accomplished Atlanta infertility specialist with years of experience performing in vitro fertilization and other reproductive treatment options, she is also renowned in her field as one of the leading experts on adolescent gynecology and reconstruction of uterine abnormalities. She is an active member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and has served as Treasurer, as well as Program Director of the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Special Interest Group under ASRM. Dr. Carpenter also served a three year term on the Board of Directors of the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. As a female infertility doctor, she is also active in the Atlanta Women’s Medical Alliance.

Dr. Carpenter expresses particular interest in treating congenital anomalies associated with infertility as well as polycystic ovarian syndrome and endometriosis. She values being able to educate patients on their diagnosis and treatment options and developing individual plans for helping couples reach their goal of parenthood.

Dr. Carpenter is married to Dr. Rick Carpenter, who is a pediatrician and family psychiatrist. Drs. Carpenter have two children in college and graduate school and enjoy following their academic pursuits. Dr. Carpenter also enjoys being outdoors with her family and finding quiet time for reading, gardening and embroidery.
