Egg donor process in Dallas-Fort Worth & what you should know

The donation process

At CCRM Fertility of Dallas-Fort Worth, we prioritize the health and well-being of our donors, providing comprehensive support throughout the egg donation process. As a donor, you’ll need to administer regular fertility injections to yourself. The criteria for donors can be stringent, with many programs preferring candidates who have completed or are nearing the completion of a university degree. From the initial screening to the actual donation, the process spans approximately three months.

The egg retrieval itself is a brief procedure, lasting about 20-30 minutes, performed under sedation. Post-procedure, donors are required to stay at the clinic for observation for a few hours, making the entire visit about half a day.

Donation frequency

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) recommends a limit of six donations per individual. This guideline is in place to ensure the health and quality of the eggs, thereby increasing the chances of successful conception for the recipient couple. There’s typically a required three-month interval between donations to allow the donor’s body to recover fully. This regulation also aims to minimize health risks to the donor and limit the number of families per donor cycle, reducing the likelihood of donor-conceived individuals inadvertently encountering each other.

At CCRM Fertility of Dallas-Fort Worth, we prioritize the health and well-being of our donors, providing comprehensive support throughout the donation process. If you’re considering egg donation, we’re here to guide you every step of the way, ensuring a rewarding experience for both you and the families you’re helping to create.

Egg donation & insurance coverage in Texas

When you’re considering egg donation—either as a donor or a recipient—understanding your insurance coverage can help you plan confidently for the road ahead. While Texas does not mandate fertility coverage, some plans may offer partial benefits depending on your employer and policy type. At CCRM Fertility of Dallas-Fort Worth, we’re here to guide you through the financial and insurance aspects of egg donation so you can focus on what matters most: growing your family or helping someone else build theirs.

Under Texas Insurance Code (Section 3.51-6, Sec. 3A), insurers are required to offer coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF) to group health plans. However, employers can choose whether or not to include these benefits in their coverage. This means that egg donor IVF cycles may or may not be covered, depending on your insurance provider and the type of plan you have.

Additionally, while recipients of donor eggs may qualify for IVF coverage if their plan includes infertility benefits, the cost of obtaining donor eggs—including donor compensation and screening—is typically not covered by insurance and is considered an out-of-pocket expense.

Fertility preservation coverage for donors

If you are undergoing medical treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery that could impact your fertility, Texas law (Tex. Health and Safety Code, Chapter 161) requires certain health benefit plans to cover fertility preservation services—including the collection and freezing of eggs. However, storage of eggs is not required to be covered, and Medicaid managed care programs are exempt from these fertility preservation mandates.

Exceptions to know

There are a few key exemptions to the Texas insurance participation laws:

  • ❌ Employers who self-insure are not required to include infertility or IVF benefits
  • ❌ Religious employers may opt out of covering fertility services
  • ❌ Medicaid managed care plans do not cover fertility preservation services
